Words and Songs

Advent:

Advent is here and we will be learning about the birth of Jesus and what Christmas is all about. We will talk about our Advent Wreath and how Advent is a time of waiting for Jesus to be born. We will be singing Away in a Manger, Jingle Bells, Silent Night and some other fun holiday songs. We will also be acting out the Christmas story and reading stories about Christmas. At school we have an advent chain made of paper links that the children made and you can also do this at home. Each day we take off one link and talk about how we are one day closer to Christmas! Advent Prayer: Come, Lord Jesus. Come and be born in our hearts.

ABC's of Advent:

Our letters for the next few weeks are ABC:
A is for Advent
B is for Baby Jesus is born in Bethlehem!
C is for Christmas

We will also visit the manger in the church gathering space before Christmas and sing our Advent songs as we wait for Baby Jesus to be born. We also have shepherds, kings, angels, Mary and Joseph costumes that were made for us. The children love to dress up and act out the Nativity story after we read about it.

Christmas Songs

Away In A Manger (please help your child to know these words)

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed.
The Little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head.
The stars in the sky look down where he lay.
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

Soon and Very Soon (clapping joyfully)

Soon and very soon, we are going to meet the King.
Soon and very soon, we are going to meet the King.
Soon and very soon, we are going to meet the King.
Alleluia! Alleluia! We are going to meet the King!

Jesus, I Adore You

Jesus, I adore you. (praying hands)
Lay my life before you. (arms spread in front)
How I love you! (cross arms across chest)
(repeat)

Counting Cookies (fingerplay)

Five little cookies sitting on a plate
Waiting for Santa -
He was running late!
Along came a reindeer,
Guess what he ate…
Crunch!
(then) Four little cookies sitting on a plate . . .

This Little Light of Mine

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
No one's going to (blow) it out, I'm gonna let it shine.
No one's going to (blow) it out, I'm gonna let it shine.
No one's going to (blow) it out, I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

There was a Little Baby (clapping)

There was a little baby, Oh my Lord
There was a little baby, Oh my Lord
There was a little baby, Oh my Lord
Way down in Bethlehem!

They laid Him in a manger, Oh my Lord
They laid Him in a manger, Oh my Lord
They laid Him in a manger, Oh my Lord
Way down in Bethlehem!

They named Him Baby Jesus, Oh my Lord
They named Him Baby Jesus, Oh my Lord
They named Him Baby Jesus, Oh my Lord
Way down in Bethlehem!

Advent Song (sung to 'Twinkle, Twinkle')

Advent is a time to wait
Not quite time to celebrate
Light the candles one by one
Till the Advent time is done.
Christmas day will be soon be here
Time for joy and time for cheer!

Hello Mr. Turkey (sung to 'If You're Happy and You Know It')

Hello, Mr. Turkey how are you?

His feet go wobble, wobble
And his head goes gobble, gobble

If You're Thankful(Sung to 'If You're Happy and You Know It')

Two Little Turkeys (sung to 'Six Little Ducks')

Six little turkeys that I once knew
Fat ones, skinny ones
There were two.
But the one little turkey with the
Funny red wattle.
He led the others with his
Gobble, gobble, gobble.
He led the others with his
Gobble, Gobble, Gobble.

The Lord is Good To Me

The Lord is Good To Me
And so I thank the Lord.
For giving me,
The things I need,
The sun and the rain
And the apple trees.
The Lord is Good To Me!

Thank you for the world so sweet (prayer)

Thank you for the world so sweet.
Thank you for the food we eat.
Thank you for the birds that sing.
Thank you God for everything.
Amen.

Over the River and Through the Woods

Over the river and through the woods
To grandmother's house we go;
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh,
Through the white and drifted snow, O!

Over the river and through the woods
Oh how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes, and bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.

Thanksgiving (sung to 'Where is Thumbkin?')

Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving.
Here it comes! Here it comes!
Turkey on the table, turkey on the table.
Mmm good. Mmm good.

Cornbread muffins, chestnut stuffing.
Pumpkin pie, ten feet high.
We were so much thinner, before we came to dinner.
Me oh my. Me oh my!

I'm Glad I'm not a Turkey (sung to 'Have You Ever Seen a Lassie')

I'm glad I'm not a turkey,
A turkey, a turkey.
I'm glad I'm not a turkey
On Thanksgiving Day!

Gray Squirrel, Gray Squirrel
Swish your bushy tail.

Scarecrow, Scarecrow turn around.
Scarecrow, Scarecrow jump up and down.
Scarecrow, Scarecrow arms up high.
Scarecrow, Scarecrow wink one eye.
Scarecrow, Scarecrow bend your knees.
Scarecrow, Scarecrow flap in the breeze.
Scarecrow, Scarecrow climb into bed.
Scarecrow, Scarecrow rest your head.

I'm a Little Acorn Brown

I'm a Little Acorn Brown,
Lying on the cold, cold ground
Everybody steps on me,
That is why I'm cracked you see.
I'm a nut. (clap, clap)
In a rut. (clap, clap)
I'm a nut. (clap, clap)
In a rut. (clap, clap)

Apple Song

Way up high in the apple tree,
Two Little apples smiled at me.
I shook that tree as hard as I could,
Down came the apples,
Mmm, they were good.

Autumn Leaves are Falling Down

Autumn Leaves are Falling Down
Falling Down, Falling Down.
Autumn Leaves are Falling Down
Down to the Ground!

This is the Way We Rake the Leaves.

This is the way we rake the leaves, rake the leaves, rake the leaves. This is the way we rake the leaves, Day after day, in the fall!
This is the way we bag the leaves…Day after day, in the fall!
This is the way we toss the leaves…Day after day in the fall!
This is the way we play in the leaves…Day after day in the fall!

Do You Love Halloween? (sung to 'Do your ears hang low')

Do you love halloween?
When you dress up to be seen.
You can be a fury cat,
Or a silly flying bat.
You can walk down your street,
Knock on doors, say 'trick or treat'
Do you love Halloween?

5 Little Pumpkins Sitting on a Gate

5 little pumpkins sitting on a gate
The first one said 'Oh my it's getting late!'
The second one said 'There are Witches in the Air!'
The third one said 'I don't care!'
The fourth one said 'Let's run and run and run!'
The fifth one said 'I'm ready for some fun!'
Woooooo went the wind and OUT (clap) went the lights!
And the five little pumpkins
Rolled out of sight!!
